Writing Reviews of Scientific Articles

Writing a review for scientific papers goes through two main stages. Before proceeding with the creation, it is necessary to study the creation, to conduct its deep and comprehensive analysis for content compliance.

At this stage, check:

  • relevance of the topic and its argumentation: it is not enough just to write that the study is relevant, it is important to prove it;

  • substantiation of the relevance and popularity of the topic, the frequency of requests and references to such studies;

  • the degree of study and disclosure of the issue;

  • the presence of a mechanism and algorithm of actions, the course of the study;

  • presentation and presentation of the material, promotion of the author's thought;

  • the structure and logic of the text, theses and key words;

  • compliance with the title and its content of the work;

  • absence of errors and unnecessary arguments;

  • uniqueness (plagiarism);

  • practical significance of the study;

  • the presence of the conclusions of the author.

After studying and checking the content and completeness of the material, you should begin to evaluate the design part. To do this, just check the text:

  • the correctness of the design of paragraphs, red lines, a list of sources used, links and footnotes;

  • abstract and keywords. Particular attention is paid to the presentation of the text in English. Mistakes are not allowed.

  • literacy of quoting: in what language is cited, are the sources reliable, the quality of the author's translation;

  • absence of inaccuracies, inconsistencies and contradictions;

  • correctness and language of presentation. The use of jargons, colloquial phrases is strictly prohibited;

  • conciseness, consistency and clarity of writing.

The reviewer substantiates in his assessment the answer to the main question: “Why should the material be printed?”.

Manuscript review

After the author has finished putting his thoughts on paper, the manuscript goes to the publishing house, which invites (usually at least 2) reviewers who understand the topic. It should be noted that the review of the manuscript is not published, it is advisory in nature.

The review process is limited in time. Each publisher sets its own time frame: from several days to several weeks. If the manuscript received two negative reviews, then with a probability of 90% it will not be published. In most cases, at the review stage , shortcomings are identified that can be eliminated in the course of revision.

Peculiarities of dissertation review

A dissertation review is carried out exclusively by a specialist who has a scientific degree and understands a particular field and topic. Most often, a successful defense requires several reviews (5-8 reviews). Different experts will analyze the work of the author from different angles, give their assessment, and identify the advantages and disadvantages of the work.

The principle “how many people, so many opinions” applies here. In a dissertation review, experts analyze the style of presentation, the author's consistency, the significance of his work and recommend the assignment of a scientific title.
